The Chairman Waited Outside
Rowan Pryce built Kittiwake Line from one second-hand freighter in a harbour shed, then stepped out of sight: no photographs, no interviews, a name on a holding company's filings. Three years ago he met Nell Dunmore, a sailing teacher, told her he was a clerk in the harbour office, and married her because she loved that man. Her mother, Constance, has never forgiven it. On the night of Constance's grand harbour gala, with Kittiwake's CEO, Imani Holt, the guest she has courted for months, perhaps about to arrive, she orders her son-in-law, one of that company's clerks as far as she knows, to wait outside in the rain. Imani does arrive, walks past the hostess and says one word to the man on the steps: "Chairman." Now Nell has ten episodes to learn who she married, Constance has ten to learn what her son-in-law owns, and a board member who knows where the Chairman has been hiding has until the annual meeting to sell the company out from under him.
