My Husband Texts Me From 2009
Tang Wan, a picture framer, buries her husband Lu Zhen on a grey October morning. That night, at midnight, the old silver flip phone his grandmother pressed into her hands lights up by itself. The message is from Lu Zhen at twenty-one, in 2009, who wants to know why a stranger has his number. She knows his name, his habits and the day he will die. Every warning she sends rewrites her present: the picture on her shop wall, the ring on her finger. Then the boy works out how his life ended, and he asks her to stay away from him so that he can live.
