First to Fall Loses the Mansion
Ivy Calloway has spent six years bringing the rose gardens of Larkhill House back to life. Wes Hartigan, the lawyer grandson who left the family firm, has spent six years trying to sell the place. When old Augustus Hartigan dies, his housekeeper of fifty years, Mrs Pruitt, reads out a will with one very strange clause: the two rivals must marry each other before sunset, live in the house for a year, and whoever falls in love first forfeits Larkhill to the other. Both swear they are immune. Mrs Pruitt, who typed the clause as a joke, keeps a little red notebook of every slip, and has quietly bet on both of them. Then the roses, the thunderstorms and one very dry bedroom get involved, and a shiny car pulls up the drive with a very interested buyer.
