Tideborn Reaper
The fishing town of Kurogai has always paid a strange toll: now and then, something crosses over from the Drowned Shrine sunk somewhere beyond the point, and someone in a tide-coat goes out to meet it. Fourteen-year-old Isao Natsume has never managed to do anything right on dry land — but standing in the surf, his late grandmother's reaping hook in hand, the tide answers him like it's been waiting. When a tide-spirit bigger than anyone has seen in years drags itself onto the beach during the town's one big summer festival, Isao has about four minutes of knee-deep water and no training to decide whether he's really his grandmother's heir, or just the next name the sea takes.
